Teams may either attend the competition here in Auckland, or may participate remotely. Remote teams must send their agent code before the competition and may submit updates as the competition proceeds. The results of each day's simulations will be made available at the end of the day. Due to New Zealand's time zone being 12 hours ahead of GMT, this will means results will be available in the morning or middle of the day for most remote participants.

Qualification for Rescue Middle Earth will follow the same procedure as Robocup 2004. Teams must submit a Team Description Paper of no more than 12 pages, and a log file showing the performance of the team.

The competition will run for three days. The first two days will be used to develop rankings for the teams and the third day will hold the semi-finals and finals.
